Read more: https://impactinnovation.se/program/swedish-metals-minerals/ Your duties As a PhD student in this project, you get to work in a world-leading grouping around application-inspired basic research in thin film physics, especially hard ceramic surface coatings. The position mainly involves conducting application-inspired basic research on thin film materials where the main goal is to develop new environmentally friendly surface coating processes with maintained layer quality, functionality and reduced energy consumption. The project is carried out in close collaboration with a Swedish industrial company. The project includes process development, plasma analysis, and synthesis and characterization of thin films. It is about controlling and understanding the structure and properties of the surface coatings at the atomic and nanometer level. Materials science is fundamentally interdisciplinary, which means close collaboration with theorists and researchers at other universities in Sweden and internationally. Our close collaboration with industry provides an extra opportunity for those who do not want to stay in academia after the thesis work. Publication in scientific journals and presentations at international conferences are also included in the service. As a doctoral student, you dedicate yourself to your doctoral education and research projects in which you are a part. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other department assignments, up to 20 percent of full time. Your qualifications You have completed a degree at advanced level in physics, chemistry, or materials science, or completed courses of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or in some other way acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. Documented experience with PVD synthesis methods, such as magnetron sputtering and plasma analysis, as well as with techniques for the characterization of thin layers - for example XRD, SEM, TEM or XPS - is advantageous. Extension of employment up to five years takes place based on degree of teaching and department assignments. For special reasons, a further extension may take place. You are initially employed for one year, and then the employment is renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan. Access by agreement.
